2003 CIAA All-Rookie Teams Announced
St. Augustine’s Brown, Virginia State’s Wyatt Earn Rookie of the Year Honors

HAMPTON, VA -- Saint Augustine’s College guard Rhonda Brown and Virginia State University center Avis Wyatt headline a list of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s top 10 basketball freshmen that have been named to the 2003 CIAA All-Rookie Teams, as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors’ Association.

Brown, a 5-foot-6 native of Radcliff, KY, was chosen as the CIAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year. A five-time CIAA Rookie of the Week pick, she currently leads the Lady Falcons with 3.0 assists per game (15th in CIAA) and 2.9 steals per game (fifth in CIAA), and is second on the team with 11.7 points per game (16th in CIAA). Other members of the 2003 CIAA Women’s Basketball All-Rookie Team are: Tiffany Allen of Virginia State, Shari Burgess of Bowie State University, Sherree Gillespie of Livingstone College, and Venkia Jones of Elizabeth City State University.

Wyatt, a 6-foot-9 center playing in his hometown Petersburg, VA, was named the CIAA Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year. A two-time CIAA Rookie of the Week selection, he currently tops the conference with an average of 3.04 blocked shots per contest, is 11th in the league and second on the team with 6.9 rebounds per outing, and is ninth in the CIAA with a 54.8 field goal percentage. Other 2003 CIAA Men’s Basketball All-Rookie Team honorees are: John Fulton of Johnson C. Smith University, Alleggrie Guinn and Robert Lee of Winston-Salem State University, and Charles Nickens of North Carolina Central University.
