29thAnnual CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Monday, February 24, 2003 Lady Falcons Defeat Bowie StateFEBRUARY 24, 2003, Raleigh, NC---Saint Augustine's Lady falcons defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State 74-68 in the final game of the CIAA tournament's first round action. The Lady Falcons (12-17) jumped on the Bulldogs in the first 10 minutes of the game taking a 23-10 lead at the 9:29 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by Marcia Bailey. But the Lady Bulldogs (13-16) came roaring back to close the gap behind a Rachill Robinson lay-up at the 5:30 mark to make the score 25-20. The Lady Falcons would pull away going into the half with a 39-29 lead. The Lady Falcons came out of the break on fire as they built a 20-point lead, 53-33 on a lay-up by Dana Atikins at the 15:16 mark of the second half. From there, St. Augustine's would cruise but the Lady Bulldogs came storming back to cut the lead to 58-48 at the 8:39 mark. From there the Lady Bulldogs scored five unanswered points to make the score 58-53 at the 7:45 mark. The Lady Bulldogs would then cut the lead to 66-63 on a free throw by Allyson Hardy with 4:19 left in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs tied the score at 66-66 on a free throw by Hardy with 3:32 to go in the game. The Lady Falcons turned up the pressure at crunch time to build a 71-66 lead on a free throw by Nichelle Bonaparte with 43 second remaining. Leading the way for the Lady Falcons was Rhonda Brown who had 24 points and six assists. She was joined in double figures by Atkins with 14, Bailey, Cassandra Berry, and Shanika Wallace who had 11 points a piece. Pacing the Lady Bulldogs was Hardy with a game-high 32 points. Robinson had 13 and Kenyail Johnson had 10 points. St. Augustine's College will play Winston-Salem State University tomorrow night at 9:00 pm. |
