The Falcons of St. Augustine's College are returning as three time Indoor Track and Field Champions, led by Coach George Williams. Last year, the Falcons outscored the competition by 186 points, winning gold medals in seven events. The race for second and third was close with Virginia State edging out North Carolina Central by a narrow margin of three points in team scoring.
In the race for the women's title, the Lady Falcons defeated their competition in eight events and won the title with a total of 156 points. North Carolina Central took second and Virginia State followed at third.
The new year welcomes improved teams, which means that these titles are up for grabs. St Augustine's key returnees are Cheron Clark who finished fourth in the nation for the 400 meter dash and Jason Smoots, a sophomore, who has posted a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 6.70 in the men's 60 meter dash. Shaw University has a chance to dethrone the Falcons with key team members including Eureka Thompson, who posted a time of 2:33.07 on the 800m event and on the men's side, Shaw's recruit Lloyd Knight, who posted a time of 53.22 in the 400m event. Virginia State will also utilize their key runners including Shlyan Scott who posted a time of 2:25.27 on the 800m events.
With the introduction of a new home for CIAA Indoor Runners, old records are sure to be broken and new winners are soon to be honored. Tor more information please call (757) 865-0071.
