RAMS RIDE INTO QUARTERFINALS WITH DEFENSE

RALEIGH, NC –The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State used tough defense and outstanding post play to upend the Panthers of Virginia Union, 75-60, in the opening night of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Panthers (9-17) half court offense was hampered as a result of the Rams frisky defense, which forced VUU into shooting 22 percent from the floor in the first half.  The Rams built a 35-19 lead by the break.

Tonya Pegram helped the Panthers back into the game as she poured in 13 points to close the Rams’ lead to 50-44 with 9:14 remaining in the game.

WSSU (15-12) answered back with a run of their own as Danielle Probst pushed the score back up and out of reach as she ignited a 7-1 run.

Lori Shelby led the Rams offensive charge by scoring a game-high 19 points and dishing out 4 assists.  Danielle Propst stepped-up and scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while 2002 All-CIAA forward Tiffany Whitted completed the game with 8 points.

WSSU’s first year head coach Daymond Lindell was able to get balanced scoring from his team as the Rams had four players score in double-figures.

“We worked the ball inside out and were able to take the pressure off of Shelby,” said Lindell.  “We played good spurts of defense and our man-to-man defense helped bail us out.”

The Rams ended up forcing VUU into shooting 34 percent from the floor and 33 turnovers.  WSSU dominated post play as they outscored the Panthers in the paint 38-28.

Nichole Whitfield and Latoya Taylor scored 10 each for the Panthers.

The Rams will face Elizabeth City State in tomorrow’s quarterfinal matchup at 3:00 p.m.
